Issue 6 / Volume 7                                   July 2018

MOWDIABLOREGION.ORG

Happy Birthday to … me!  Later this month I turn 60 years young.  I am reminded that, but for the good fortune of health, I could now be one of our clients.

Sixty percent of health happens at home — a direct result of affordable housing, safety, good nutrition, and preventable injuries like falls. The social determinants of health also include elder abuse (yes, I can now be considered “elderly”).  One in 10 persons over 60 will become a victim of elder abuse this year.  MOWDR continues to provide services to improve health outcomes and fight elder abuse.

This year, I am celebrating the big six-o with a personal Facebook fundraiser for my birthday to raise money for MOWDR. And when your birthday rolls around, consider yourself lucky and do the same! You can set up your own personal Facebook campaign in 5 easy steps:
  • Click Fundraisers in the left menu of your Facebook News Feed.
  • Click Raise Money.
  • Select Nonprofit/Charity.
  • Select Meals on Wheels Diablo Region, choose a cover photo and fill in the fundraiser details.
  • Click Create.
Think of all of the lives we can change through Facebook posts.  Happy Birthday to all of us “elderly” youngsters!

Hello Far East County
This month, Meals on Wheels Diablo Region (MOWDR) officially expanded our reach to provide even more services to seniors living in Far East Contra Costa County. As of July 1, MOWDR assumed the routes of Meals on Wheels East County, and the expansion will connect those who work and volunteer for the latter to greater services and support through the larger agency. Learn more about our expansion in this article from the Brentwood Press.

Stay Cool this Summer
Summer is in full swing and means that temperatures are on the rise. Keep cool this summer and prevent problems like heat stroke. For older adults, drink plenty of liquids, spend time in air-conditioned places, and exercise indoors. During hot weather, think about making daily visits to older relatives and neighbors. In the event of a heat wave, offer older loved ones the help they need to stay safe. Learn more ways to #BeatTheHeat from the National Institute of Aging here.

Habit of Giving
Steve E. read a newspaper article about MOWDR needing volunteers. He immediately thought about his grandmother, Christina. “She came to the United States from Greece in 1922 and worked hard all her life. She loved to cook, especially when she was cooking for others. I was particularly fond of when she would make her spanakopita. Yet when she got older, she received Meals on Wheels and it really made a difference in her life."

From there, Steve decided to become a volunteer and donor. “The best part of volunteering is that the men and women are so happy when I come to the door," Steve explained. “Volunteering and donating to MOWDR makes me feel good."

There are all kinds of volunteer activities. And donations are always welcome!

Well Connected
Well Connected, formerly Senior Center Without Walls, is a Community Service
of Covia. It is a phone and online-based
program offering activities, education, friendly conversation, and an assortment of classes and support groups for older adults, accessible from the comfort of home. Play a game, write a poem, go on a virtual tour, meditate, share a gratitude, get support, and most importantly, connect and engage with others across the country every day.
